THE BEST MULLED WINE RECIPE!

If you have been to a ski field anywhere in the world, you have likely had a mulled wine. A perfect combination of spices, dark fruits and berries, orange, and red wine, served warm to thaw out after a day in the cold.

The origins of this drink date back to the Roman Empire where they heated wine with spices as a means to warm up in winter. It has changed and evolved in many different ways over the years with the most commonly known variant “Gluewhein” being popularised in the winter markets throughout Germany and Austria since the 1400’s.

Ingredients

 1 x bottle red wine (ideally a merlot, zinfandel, or grenache)

 1 x orange

 6-8 cloves

 2 star anise

 2 x cinnamon stick

 75 grams sugar

 75 ml Brandy

Method

1. Zest or peel the orange and juice flesh in to a large saucepan

2. Add the full bottle of wine and and all the spices to the pot

3. Heat on low (Do not let it boil)

4. Once warm, add in the sugar and stir in to dissolve.

5. Once dissolved, leave on low heat to simmer for 15 minutes (DO not boil) to

let the spices release flavour in to the liquid.

6. Taste and when spices have flavoured the mix, stir in the brandy, then strain

all the wine through a sieve and in to mugs to serve.

7. Garnish with cinnamon stick and orange twist.
