5 COCKTAILS TO KEEP YOU WARM!

Updated: Jul 30

Let's face it, generally we all associate cocktails with sitting in the sun, or by the water on a tropical island and not as much when the mercury drops. Well, shame on us… Why should our cocktail consumption be limited only to hot weather…

At home in Australia we are in the middle of the cooler months, and as such have been inspired to curate a list of some of the best winter cocktails that we love and that help us to warm up when the temperature drops!

Here are our favourite 5 winter warmers that we suggest to have a crack at home, or put them on your bar menu to add a seasonal twist to your winter cocktail menu!

01 / Mulled Wine

If you have been to a ski field anywhere in the world, you have likely had a mulled wine…. A perfect combination of spices, dark fruits and berries, orange, and red wine, served warm to thaw out after a day in the cold.

The origins of this drink date back to the Roman Empire where they heated wine with spices as a means to warm up in winter. It has changed and evolved in many different ways over the years with the most commonly known variant “Gluewhein” being popularised in the winter markets throughout Germany and Austria since the 1400’s.

02/ Irish Coffee

It is said that Irish Coffee was first created in the 1940’s by a barman at Shannon Airport, outside of Limerick in Ireland, called Joe Sheridan. He sought to offer travellers a  warming “pick me up” as they waited to travel, and the cocktail is still now widely offered around the world as exactly that. A warming pick me up!

03 / Hot Toddy

Like many cocktails, the actually origins of the Hot Toddy and how it was created are widely disputed… Some suggest it originated in British Occupied India in the 1600’s where a mixture of Tea, Whiskey and Spices was served and made popular.

Others suggest that a Doctor in Dublin named “Todd” would prescribe a hot whiskey drink as a medication for patients and this is where the cocktail was created.

Another story is that it originated in Scotland where whiskey distilleries served hot tea with their whiskeys to help warm up in the brutal Scottish winters.

04 / Boulevardier

If you love a Negroni, this is a wintery twist on the classic, substituting Gin for Whiskey. The whiskey helps to bring a new richness to the traditional refreshingly bitter cocktail, and adds a depth of warmth and complexity.

05 / New York Sour

Made popular in Manhattan (New York) which is where it gets its name, but actually created in Chicago originally in the 1880’s, the New York Sour has had many previous alias’s.  The now widely popular drink is perfect for a winter pick me up as it features 2 of our favourite warming ingredients…. Bourbon and Red Wine.
